400- wins over zero (rules questions)
Postby Eddie Basco » Mon Apr 16, 2018 9:09 am

It has been a long time since i was able to compete and make several hunts in a row. I just attended a (30) hunt this weekend and had a great time seeing and huting with all the folks at the hunt. I am sending this post for PKC officials, because I feel that the rules centered around the cast winner is not ideal. I have read the rules and fully understand the rules as they are written today, but it is my opinion that the struture of the rules are not condusive to selecting the best performance of the cast.
Strike Tree Final Score
Dog A - 100-
25 circle 100 circle
75 deleted (end of hunt) 100- 100- 100- 400-

Dog B - 50-
100 deleted (end of hunt) 50-

Dog C - 50 deleted (came into tree)
50 deleted (end of hunt) 0

The rules as they are today makes Dog A the cast winner. Keep in mind all dogs were hunting and competing. Never was there a hound not competing or in woods.

Rules state that circle points count a zero!
If circle points count as zero, how does 400- win?? isn't zero better than 400-

Jerry please explain the logic behind this rule.

Why should the dog that didn’t make a tree in this situation win?

Not looking for another question. Just what makes 400- better than zero. How can a hound strike and quit, tree and quit, be doing better than a hound that is working not and getting treed?

should a dog that has 150- on a slick and 125+ get beat by a dog that doesn’t do anything? 0 is better than 25-. The dog that makes legitimate tree wins.

Circle points do count as zero, except when breaking ties or if no other dog in the cast has circle points. Here is the current rule.

18.A.5. Dog with No Plus Or Circle Points - A dog without plus or circle points cannot place over a dog who has scored plus points or circle points.
Please prepare yourself and your hound. Hunt the dog, read the Blue Book, and your Good Book!

Hey Nate,

I love your point. If a dog trees and a coon is scored, by all means, this hound deserves to win. But a dog that trees a circle tree, could be treeing just about anything, flying squirrels, frogs, lizards, etc. or maybe just barking at the moon. Maybe if we sit down and wait a coon will come and get in that tree. However the odds are that won't happen. I have hunted with dogs that tree every 100 yards, the trees get circled up, well maybe there could be a coon hide behind that leaf!!! Right have you ever heard that before.

Let's make is simple!!! Tree, coon seen + !!! Tree coon not seen -!!! and then let's see if some of these tree dogs will turn into coon dogs. Way to much treeing and not enough coon treeing.

However if my dogs does what he/she is suppose to do, we get treed with a coon, and it should not matter what the other dogs are doing or not doing.

The topic should have read selection of cast winner verses rules as they are today.
